5 Homemade Chemical Free Bug Repellents That Work

Not only can insects be a nuisance in your garden, but they can ruin a perfect picnic or hike. Here are a few totally green, home remedy suggestions to repel insects without using toxic chemicals.

#1 Pepper Spray
This works great for ants and other small pests. Boil 2 or 3 cups of water. Add about ½ to 2/3 cup of chopped hot pepper. Let marinate for a few minutes. Run the mixture thru a sieve to remove the peppers. Put the liquid in a squirt bottle and use when necessary. Be careful not to spray directly on foliage.

#2 Minty Soap Spray
This is great for ants. Mix 2 tbsp of Dr. Bonners mint soap with a gallon of water. Spray directly on ants. This will also work to ward off other pests on foliage however be care when you spray it directly on your plants. It has been known to burn some plants if too much is applied.

#3 Pure Vanilla Extract
Dab a little on you wrists, neck and behind the ears. Many insects don’t like the smell.

#4 Chem-Free Bug Off Mist
Mix witch hazel with a few drops of tea tree oil, lavender oil, or peppermint oil in a squirt bottle. Lightly mist your body. You can also add one of these essential oils to an unscented organic lotion for a bug repelling moisturizer.

Have a healthy, fun and safe summer!

Nothing says summer like lounging on the beach or splashing around in the pool. But summer is also the season for sunburns, bug bites and water emergencies. So, before you pack your pool bag, play it safe and protect your family with the following safety advice from the American College of Emergency Physicians and other safety experts.

USE SUN SENSE

Sunlight contains skin-damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can increase the risk of skin cancer, skin aging and other skin conditions.

REMEMBER THESE BASIC SUN SMARTS:

> Limit sun exposure. Try to stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest.

> Before heading outdoors, apply sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of a minimum of 15, preferably higher. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

> Wear a hat that shades the face, neck and ears. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block UV rays.

> Wear protective clothing or stay in the shade as much as possible.

Follow these simple “sun sense” rules and you and your family will have a happy and safe summer. So, get out there and ENJOY!

Do you suffer from chronic tiredness?

Tiredness is also known as fatigue. It settles in the human body in a moment when its resources, physical or psychical, are overused and, accordingly, the human body reacts protecting itself by not responding in a prompt manner to various stimulus.

The physical tiredness “is visible” when the body has to respond to stimulus. Reactions are slowed, body movements suppose a bigger effort for their execution and also body weakness and sleepiness are felt. The brain mobilizes itself harder to reproduce the same reactions than it usually does, attention is lowering with every second that passes. Some memory problems, apathy, nervousness and irritability also can be present .

Everyone had experienced such episodes, especially when you were to resolve some various jobs or issues at the same time, or you got very tired because of excess of physical effort. Often a good movie, some music and good sleep, especially when the person next to you understands what you are passing through, may turnout as “miracles”.

What happens when this fatigue becomes a regular lifestyle, and the symptoms don’t seem to go away just by resting?

When fatigue becomes a permanent state of being?

The chronic fatigue syndrome settles in after 6 months of systematic fatigue and exhaustion that interferes significantly with the person’s life quality. The manifestation cause of the chronic fatigue syndrome is not very clear(precise). The symptoms are influenced by environmental causes (stressing, solicitant environment) with physical problems (from flu, cold, to immunity and endocrine systems’ diseases) and psychological causes (vulnerability, depression). Depression can be a cause, but also an effect of chronic fatigue.

If you noticed that lately you have felt tiredness too often, you should take the following facts into consideration:

> The fatigue is real. Even after periods of low activity, fatigue is persistent and silent. This thing is hard to understand, especially when the exhaustion feeling is noticed after a long period of apparent rest. Therefore, for those who have these symptoms, it is sometimes hard to communicate with family or friends and to decide together that something more then just rest is needed.

> There are good times and there are bad times. There can be times when, apparently with no explanation, you feel good, and afterwards, the fatigue state reappears.

> The sleep is not always restful.

> Orthostatic hypotension can blow in (the blood pressure decay when we stand up), which for the most part is interpreted as a state of flabbiness, weakness or even swoon.

It is hard to determine the diagnosis of the chronic fatigue syndrome and the variety of treatments is very considerable. As the respect for the own person appears earlier and the feeling of tiredness is being taken seriously, the hope to be restored to health increases.

11 Unusual(ly Simple) Ways to Improve Your Health

Each year there are thousands of new articles and books aimed at helping you lose weight and stay in shape. Most of these only focus on the cornerstones of good health: diet and exercise. Same message, new words right?

Well, there is no mistaking the fact that diet and exercise are crucial to your existence. However, what if you want to go deep? What if you want to do something radical to shake up a monotonous healthy routine?

Instead of just getting by, this list will get you started with some uncommon ways that you can help you go above and beyond to create total health.

1) Try using Neti pots. This age old nasal rinse technique removes mucus and build up of pollution in the nasal passages. It also helps prevent respiratory tract infections, relieves allergies, colds, sinusitis and is beneficial in the treatment of headaches and migraines.

2) Brushing your skin? We all know that the skin is the largest organ in the body. It is responsible for one-fourth of the body’s daily detoxification. When you do skin brushing, you help your lymph system to clean itself of the toxins that collect in the lymph glands.

3) Make fasting a regular habit. Short and long term fasts can improve health through detoxification and rejuvenation of the body. When the body is not using the majority of its energy for digestion, it is able to use its energy on healing and restoration. The digestive system is given a much needed rest while the body is able to detoxify. As always, you should consult a medical practitioner before attempting a fast.

4) Use colon hydrotherapy. Cleansing the colon has many health benefits. It reduces the pressure in the abdominal area, reduces weight, expels parasites and helps promote regular elimination. Colonics helps restore normal muscle tone and removal of constipation. Water is absorbed through the colon which increases the volume of blood. The circulation of blood increases, resulting in greater bathing of the cells. This dilutes the toxins and helps flush them out.

5) Breathe, you’re alive. Breath is life. We can live a long time without food or water, but without breath, we die in minutes. Proper breathing is one of the most important functions of good health. Yet we often breathe shallowly, due to improper posture, stress and other negative influences. In order to breathe properly, our breath should reach the bottom of our lungs. Practice 6 second breathing, 3 seconds on inhale, 3 seconds on exhale. More oxygen will start flowing through your body and you will begin to feel energized. Just by becoming conscious of our breathing, we can have a great impact on our well-being.

6) Tai Chi walking. Recent research has shown that walking may be better for us than the more popular running. That’s because physiologically we’ve adapted as hunter-gatherers (more like gatherer-hunters) to walk long distances. We spent the majority of our time walking, not running. Tai Chi walking can help us to take our walking a step further by learning how to adapt to a new way of walking whereby we gain energy with each step.

7) Consider getting a new mattress. New memory foam mattresses can help you get a better nights rest which improves your overall feeling of well being. Some of the benefits include, less soreness and stiffness in the morning, no irritating pressure points and a long lasting mattress.

8) Buy Masai balance shoes. Designed around the way you naturally walk on sand, these new shoes are designed to put less of a shock on the skeletal system. They are designed with a unique spring level action which helps to make your core strengthening muscles more active, which in turn helps to improve your posture.

9) Improve your posture. Poor posture results in shallow breathing, pain in the neck and back, and results in poor circulation of energy throughout the body. Here are a few tips to improve your posture:

>Sit towards the front of the chair. This will naturally cause you to sit up straight.
>Try using an exercise ball. Dare to be different, try using an exercise ball as a chair. You’ll force yourself to sit up straight. =)
>Take breaks away from the desk. Prolonged sitting in front of the computer will cause your back to become tired more easily. It’s also easier to keep your back straight standing, rather than sitting.

10) Bring more plants into your home and workplace. We all know that plants turn carbon dioxide into oxygen. But did you know plants can also purify the air, removing harmful pollutants? Not only will the air you breathe be fresher, plants also naturally humidify the air reducing allergies and sinusitis. Plants have psychological benefits as well. We are happier, less stressed and more productive in a greener, more natural environment. If you don’t have a little plant at your workstation, get one or two!

11) Laugh every day! Whoever said life has to be serious? Studies have shown that laughter decreases stress hormones and can act as a powerful muscle relaxer. Laughter can help you breathe deeper, strengthen your immune system, forget about pain and lower blood pressure. As they say, laughter is the best medicine.
