Nothing says summer like lounging on the beach or splashing around in the pool. But summer is also the season for sunburns, bug bites and water emergencies. So, before you pack your pool bag, play it safe and protect your family with the following safety advice from the American College of Emergency Physicians and other safety experts.
USE SUN SENSE
Sunlight contains skin-damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can increase the risk of skin cancer, skin aging and other skin conditions.
REMEMBER THESE BASIC SUN SMARTS:
> Limit sun exposure. Try to stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest.
> Before heading outdoors, apply sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of a minimum of 15, preferably higher. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
> Wear a hat that shades the face, neck and ears. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block UV rays.
> Wear protective clothing or stay in the shade as much as possible.
Follow these simple “sun sense” rules and you and your family will have a happy and safe summer. So, get out there and ENJOY!
